In seeking to generalize the existence theorem of Riemann on holomorphic integrals (sometimes called abelian differentials of the first kind) over a Riemann surface, Hodge considers a 2n-dimensional Riemannian manifold as the space over which a certain class of intergals has its origins in this investigation, the notion of a complex manifold being the natural generalization of a Riemann surface.
